Erst Anfang des Jahres hatten SONATA ARCTICA ihr letztes Album „Pariah’s Child“ veröffentlicht und kaum, dass die Jahreszeit anbricht, in der man sich Gedanken machen muss, wo man die Schneeschaufel verstaut hat, ist die finnische Wolfscrew wieder zur Stelle und sorgt mit einem Re-Release ihres 1999 erschienenen „Ecliptica“ für ordentliches Winterfeeling. Am 24. Oktober ist es soweit, also sammelt besser Feuerholz vorher. Sänger und Frontmann Tony Kakko versorgt zwar gerade die USA mit einer ordentlichen Portion Power Metal, nahm sich während der Tour aber dennoch Zeit, per Mail auf ein paar Fragen zu antworten. Der Wolf neben ihm im Tourbus störte dabei nur geringfügig.

Hi Tony! Der Wolf ist seit Anfang eurer Karriere ein stetiges Maskottchen für eure Band. Watain benutzen ihn ebenfalls als Symbol und bei ihnen steht er für den Kontrast aus Faszination und Angst, wie sieht es bei euch mit seiner Bedeutung aus?

Tony Kakko: Bei uns bedeutet er das Gleiche, allerdings steht er auch für Respekt und die Bewunderung, die wir für dieses großartige Tier hegen. Er wurde quasi zu unserem Aushängeschild und ich benutze ihn immer wieder als Metapher für zahlreiche Dinge in meinen Texten.
„X Marks The Spot“ ist einer eurer großartigsten Songs auf „Pariah’s Child“ in meinen Augen, deshalb muss ich einfach fragen: Wo würdest du eine Schatzkiste vergraben, wenn du es müsstest? Und was genau würdest du in der Kiste verbuddeln wollen?
Interessante Frage! Sehr nett. Ähm… wow… und du glaubst wirklich, dass ich dir das Versteck verraten würde? Haha! Es kommt natürlich auf die Größe und Art des Schatzes an, aber eine gewöhnliche Kiste würde ich vermutlich einfach in meinem Garten vergraben, die würdest du niemals wieder finden!
Du sagst häufig, dass deine Texte nicht autobiografisch sind und man sie nicht als dein Tagebuch deuten sollte. Aber angenommen du würdest etwas Autobiografisches schreiben, nach was würde die Musik dann klingen?
Naja, ich klaue schon die ein oder andere kleine Idee aus meinem eigenen Leben, aber ja, die meiste Zeit ist das eher nicht der Fall. Aber wenn ich jetzt eine musikalische Untermalung für mein Tagebuch schreiben müsste, wäre das eine total seltsame Form von Metal für kleine Kinder!
Auf eurem „Ecliptica – Revisited“ veröffentlicht ihr ein Cover von Genesis‘ „I can’t dance“ als Bonustrack. Wie kamt ihr darauf, diesen alten Klassiker hervorzukramen und am allerwichtigsten: Kannst du wirklich nicht tanzen?
Eigentlich ist der Song schon mehrere Jahre alt, wir haben ihn zur selben Zeit aufgenommen wie „Stones Grow Her Name“, aber fanden nie den richtigen Moment, den Track zu veröffentlichen. Also kommt er jetzt hier! Für alle, die die Originalversion nicht kennen, muss man sagen, dass es ein großartiger Hit in den 90ern war, ich habe das Album damals sehr häufig gehört, ebenso wie einige Songs von Aerosmith. Und diese Tatsache, kombiniert mit meinem irren Musikgeschmack, führte zu dem Wunsch, den Song zu covern und ich liebe die Version SEHR. Momentan arbeiten wir sogar an einem “Kakkoslaatu Productions” Videoclip zu dem Song, der vermutlich zur selben Zeit veröffentlicht wird, wie das Album. Und ja, ich kann tanzen! Meisten verhindere ich das nur in der Öffentlichkeit. Aber wenn ich Zuhause bin und niemand zusieht, tanze ich ununterbrochen! Hahaa!
Werdet ihr euch beim Schreiben der Setlist nun künftig wieder mehr auf eure alten „Ecliptica“-Songs konzentrieren?

Ja, momentan graben wir mehr und mehr alte Songs aus und proben sie für die Setlist. Heute spielen wir in Calgary und wollen vier Tracks von dem Album performen, der jüngste Neuzugang ist „Letter To Dana“, den wir in seiner ursprünglichen Form nicht mehr gespielt haben seit… ich weiß es nicht einmal… 2000? Aber wir wollen unsere Setlist ein wenig rotieren lassen, sodass jede Show einen anderen Oldie zu hören bekommt.
Ich schulde dir ein riesiges Dankeschön, dafür, dass du mit Tuomas Holopainen auf seinem Scrooge-Projekt zusammengearbeitet hast, denn „Cold Heart Of The Klondike“ ist absolut fantastisch. Ihr seid bekanntlich schon sehr lange befreundet, arbeitet aber leider selten zusammen. Gedenkt ihr das in näherer Zukunft noch einmal zu wiederholen?
Danke. Es war großartig, bei diesem Projekt dabei zu sein. Ich arbeite immer gern mit Tuomas zusammen. Bisher haben wir noch keine ernsthaften Pläne, aber wenn wir eines Tages mal beide genügend Zeit haben, kann das durchaus nochmal passieren. Es wäre sicher ein spannendes Experiment, herauszufinden, wie unsere kreativen Köpfe nebeneinander funktionieren würden, vielleicht wäre es sogar ein riesiges Desaster, wer weiß! Haha!
Wenn ihr einen echten Wolf bei euch im Tourbus hättet, was würdet ihr den ganzen Tag mit ihm machen?
Ein Wolf im Tourbus? Okay, vorausgesetzt er würde sich verhalten wir ein normaler Hund, wäre das sicher möglich und… verdammt, ich habe keine Ahnung, was ich mit ihm anstellen würde! An den Tagen, wo wir nur fahren, würde ich vermutlich die ganze Zeit hinter ihm herputzen müssen. Aber an einem „normalen“ Tag würde ich mit ihm den klassischen Hundekram machen, Gassi gehen, spielen – gruseliger Gedanke trotzdem. Ein Wolf im Tourbus… GOOD ONE!
Für jeden, der nach Finnland reist, gibt es enorm viel zu sehen und zu erleben, aber gibt es aus deiner Sicht spezielle Plätze, die ein Sonata Fan unbedingt besuchen sollte? Landschaften, die dich inspirierten, Bars, Saunas..?
Ich empfehle speziell Lappland. Unsere Heimatstadt Kemi liegt im Süden von Lappland, das wäre ein großartiger Start für eine Reise. Jeden Winter bauen sie dort eine riesige Schneeburg und die ist besonders im Dunkeln absolut faszinierend. Man kann sogar darin übernachten, es ist ein Hotel! Wie cool ist das denn?! Außerdem muss man unbedingt mal in eine Sauna, aber keine elektrische, sondern eine echte mit “puukiuas”, die mit Feuer beheizt wird. Danach muss man schnell raus in den Schnee, sich darin wälzen und zurück in die Sauna rennen. Aaah, Sauna! Finnland ist voll von schönen Orten, aber Lappland ist mein persönliches Lieblingsgebiet. Insbesondere nach Inari sollte man fahren, das ist der hübscheste Platz von allen, besonders im Sommer.
Okay! Man sieht sich also irgendwo dort draußen, Freunde!

Anne/Sound Infection: The wolf has always been your band mascot. Watain use one as their symbol as well and for them, the animal stands for the combination of fear and fascination – what does your wolf mean to you and the band?
Tony Kakko: Those same things, but also respect and admiration for that great animal. It sort of has become our totem animal, if you will. I also use the wolf as a metaphor for many things.
Since „X Marks The Spot“ is by far my favourite track on „Pariah’s Child“, I just need to ask: Where would you hide a treasure? And what would you hide?
Interesting question! Very nice. Ehm… wow… and would I tell you that place? Haha! Depends on the size and nature of that treasure. A “regular” chest I think I’d just bury somewhere on my yard. You’d never find it.
You said that your lyrics are absolutely no diary for you and not inspired by your own life. Imagining they would be – how would the music sound like, located in which genre?
Well, I do take some tiny ideas from real life as well at times, but yeah, generally speaking no. Currently the music made out my supposed diary would be some form of weird metal made for children.
You are releasing the Genesis song „I can’t dance“ as a bonus track on the new „Ecliptica“ re-release. Why did you cover that particular song and – most importantly – do you really can’t dance?
It was years back…we actually recorded this already for “Stones Grow Her Name”, but we didn’t find a right moment to put it out. So here it comes now. It’s a hit song, old hit song from 90’s, for those who are too young to know the original version. I listened to the album thru few times and that somehow combined with all the Aerosmith I had listened to a lot at the time…These two
elements together with my twisted taste in music formed this in my opinion interestingly different version of that great song. I like it VERY much. I’m actually currently working on a “Kakkoslaatu Productions” video for the track. Hoping to get it out around the same time “Ecliptica” comes out. Let’s see. Oh yeah, I can dance. I just most of the time choose not to do that in public. In the safe privacy of my own home I dance all the time! Hahaa!
Will you focus more on „Ecliptica“ again, when you write the setlist for the upcoming shows?
Yes, we are currently in process of adding more and more early stuff on the setlist. Rehearsing those old songs again on tour. Like today here in Calgary we’re gonna play four tracks. Latest addition is “Letter to Dana”, which we haven’t played live in it’s original form since…I don’t even know. 2000? We’re rotating the oldies, so every show is somehow slightly different.

You worked with Tuomas on his Scrooge album, to perform on (the incredibly amazing) „Cold Heart Of The Klondike“. Even though you are close friends, you don’t publish many songs together, so are there any chances you will work together again in the close future?
Thank you. It was a fantastic project to be part of. It’s always pleasure working with Tuomas. We haven’t talked about anything seriously, but one day, when both of us find enough downtime from other projects, it’s possible. As an experiment it would be interesting to find out how our
creative minds would work together. It might prove to be a total disaster, you never know! Haha!
If you had a wolf in the tourbus with you, what would you do with it the whole day?
A wolf in the tour bus? …ok, providing it’d be acting somehow “dog enough”, so that it would be possible and safe in the first place, I think…dang, I don’t even know what to think really. On a driving day, I know, I would be cleaning after it a lot. On a “normal day”, I suppose I’d try to treat it like a dog. Normal dog stuff. Scary thought. Wolf in the tourbus. GOOD ONE!
When tourists come to Finland, they surely find enough places worth seeing in travel guides – but are there any places you would suggest people to visit, or even some that have a certain „Sonata flair“, any landscapes, bars (or saunas…) that inspired you in particular?
I recommend Lapland. Our hometown Kemi is in Southern Lapland, so it’s a good start. Every winter they build this big snow castle and it’s very pretty, especially in the dark. You can also spend a night there, as it’s also a hotel. How cool is that! You absolutely would also need to go to a real sauna. Not an electric one, but the kind with “puukiuas”, which is heated by fire. Then, of course, you must go out and roll in the snow and go back in the sauna. Ah…sauna. Finland is full of beautiful places but I love lapland the best. A place called Inari in the far North is one of the most beautiful places in Finland. Go there in summer time.
